Neurobiological-Based Counseling
Neurobiological-based counseling
Neurobiological-based counseling is a therapy that focuses on addressing thoughts, nervous system activation and biological processes. Brains experience neuroplasticity, meaning that our brain has the ability to modify itself to incorporate new learning as well as how the brain is structured. This type of counseling can assist in treating symptoms of trauma, anxiety, depression, attachment issues, emotion dysregulation and coping with chronic pain. The neurobiological-based approach incorporates several types of counseling techniques, such as EMDR, relaxation techniques, mindfulness techniques, and polyvagal interventions.

When using neurobiological-based counseling, you and your counselor will discuss options for using relaxation techniques to strengthen activation of your ventral vagal nervous system, mindfulness techniques to slow down and gain awareness of what you are experiencing, interventions for helping your amygdala better process fear, anxiety and fight or flight response, and EMDR to desensitize upsetting memories, thoughts and beliefs.
