Behavior Modification
Behavior modification
Behavior modification is a form of counseling that helps you reduce or eliminate unwanted behaviors, such as procrastination, time management or ineffective eating behaviors. It doesn’t focus on talking about your thoughts and feelings. Rather it assists you in working towards healthy behavior changes. It can also address concerns arising from anxiety, depression, OCD, and substance use.
In behavior modification you will identify your current patterns of behaviors and learn how to identify what may inadvertently reinforce the unwanted behavior. You and your counselor will then identify different ways to shift behaviors and change how the unwanted behavior is reinforced as well as how the desired behavior is reinforced.
For example, you are wanting to make to reduce eating out to save money and allow for more nutritious food options. Your therapist will ask you what occurs before, during and after you make the decision to eat out; your therapist will also assist you in identifying what makes unwanted behavior the easier behavior. Together, you and your therapist will then identify ways to make the desired behavior easier by changing what is reinforcing the desired behavior, making the unwanted behavior less desirable or developing graduated steps to engage in the desired behavior.
